Bengali uses the Bangla (Bengali) script — an abugida with around 50 primary letters. Unlike the Roman alphabet, vowels are written as diacritics attached to consonants. Most adult learners reach basic reading fluency in 4–6 weeks with regular practice.
11 independent vowels and 39 consonants form the core Bangla script. Compound consonant forms (yuktakshars) add visual complexity.
Each consonant carries an inherent vowel sound. Written vowels appear as diacritical marks above, below, before, or after the consonant.
A horizontal line runs along the top of letters in most Bangla words — a helpful visual anchor when reading. Unlike Devanagari (Hindi), the matra is less dominant.
When two consonants appear together without a vowel between them, they join into a ligature. There are hundreds of such forms — a key challenge for learners.
