What Is the CEFR Framework?
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) was developed by the Council of Europe and published in 2001. It defines six levels of language proficiency — A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2 — based on what learners can actually do with the language, not on what grammar rules they know.
The CEFR is used across more than 40 countries as the standard for language curricula, teaching materials, assessment, and immigration requirements. When you see a job posting that asks for “B2 English” or a visa requirement for “B1 French”, those references point to CEFR levels.
The framework divides into three broad bands: A (Basic User), B (Independent User), and C (Proficient User). Each band contains two sub-levels. Most language learners aim for B2 as a practical fluency target — enough to handle professional and social situations without significant difficulty.

How long does it take to reach B2 in a language?
For English speakers learning a Category I language like Spanish or French, the US Foreign Service Institute estimates 600–750 guided hours. At one hour per day, that is roughly 20–25 months. Category IV languages like Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Arabic require approximately 2,200 hours — three to four years of intensive study. These figures assume structured instruction with regular speaking practice, not passive consumption.
Is CEFR the same as native speaker level?
No. C2 describes mastery — the ability to communicate with precision, spontaneity, and nuance across all contexts — but it is not identical to native speaker competence. Native speakers have implicit cultural knowledge, full colloquial register, and exposure to regional variation that even C2 learners may lack. However, C2 is functionally indistinguishable from native proficiency for most professional and academic purposes.
Can I test my level online for free?
Yes. Unox offers a free CEFR placement test at /level-test that assesses your listening, reading, and vocabulary across 6 CEFR levels. The test takes about 15 minutes and gives you a level estimate with a breakdown by skill. Your tutor will also assess your level in the first lesson and may adjust the placement up or down based on your speaking and writing performance.
Which CEFR level do I need for a job in an English-speaking country?
Most professional roles in English-speaking countries expect B2 as a minimum — you can communicate clearly in writing and handle meetings without significant difficulty. Roles that require client-facing communication, legal work, healthcare, or teaching typically expect C1. Academic programs at top universities commonly require IELTS 7.0–7.5 (C1) or higher. B2 is sufficient for most skilled immigration programs.
How does Unox track my level progress?
Unox tutors log notes after each session and update your level indicator when they observe consistent performance at a new level. You can also retake the placement test every 4–6 weeks to measure growth. The platform shows you a timeline of lessons, notes, and level changes so you can see how far you have come. Many learners find this visible progression one of the strongest motivators for staying consistent.
