Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to learn French?
French is a Category I language for English speakers (FSI classification) — one of the easiest. Most learners reach B1 conversational level in 150–300 guided hours, roughly 6–12 months with consistent weekly lessons. DELF B2 exam-ready level typically requires 400–600 total hours. Heritage speakers with prior exposure often progress significantly faster.
What is the DELF exam and do I need it?
DELF (Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française) is the official French Ministry of Education certification, valid for life — it never expires. DELF is required for admission to French universities, certain French visas, and residency in some Francophone countries. DALF C1/C2 allows students to bypass the French language entry exam at most French institutions. Unox has certified DELF/DALF prep teachers for all levels.
What is the difference between Parisian French and Québécois French?
Parisian French (Standard European French) is the international standard — what you hear on French TV, in international organizations, and in most textbooks. Québécois French has distinct vocabulary (courriel for email, char for car), different pronunciation (the famous 'j'vas' for je vais), and faster speech rhythm. For most learners, European French is the better starting point. Unox has teachers specializing in both.
Is French grammar hard?
French grammar has real complexity for English speakers: gendered nouns (le/la), agreement rules, multiple past tenses, subjunctive mood, and the distinction between formal (vous) and informal (tu) address. However, French vocabulary has enormous overlap with English — around 30% of English words come from French (Norman Conquest, 1066). This gives English speakers a massive head start on vocabulary.
How much does a French lesson on Unox cost?
Your first trial lesson is $1. After that, French lesson prices vary by teacher and typically range from $18 to $60 per hour depending on the teacher's level of experience and specialization. DELF/DALF specialist teachers tend to be at the higher end. You can filter by budget when searching for a teacher.
