Honest Korean Learning Guide
Learn Korean in 6 Months
Realistic goals, a Hangul-first study plan, and honest answers about what 6 months of Korean study actually looks like.
The Honest Answer
Korean is harder than Spanish for English speakers — the US Foreign Service Institute classifies it as Category IV, requiring 2,200+ hours for professional proficiency. But here's the good news: Hangul is surprisingly fast to learn. Most motivated learners read Hangul within 1–2 weeks. The challenge is grammar and vocabulary, not the writing system.
In 6 months of consistent study, here's what you can realistically achieve:
- ✓Hangul: read and write confidently within the first two weeks
- ✓TOPIK I Level 1–2: pass the beginner Korean proficiency exam
- ✓600–800 vocabulary words covering everyday topics
- ✓Core grammar patterns: sentence endings, particles, honorifics basics
- ✓Survival Korean: ordering food, giving directions, shopping, emergencies
- ✓K-drama comprehension improving — catch familiar words and phrases
- ✓Hold a simple 5-minute conversation with a patient native speaker

What You Cannot Learn in 6 Months
Korean has a long road to fluency. Here's what 6 months won't cover:
- ✗Full honorific system mastery — Korean has multiple speech levels — navigating them naturally takes years
- ✗Following fast native speech — Korean spoken at native speed is very different from textbook Korean
- ✗Business or formal Korean — Formal register requires a much larger vocabulary and cultural knowledge
- ✗TOPIK II (intermediate) — TOPIK II starts at Level 3 — that's typically 12–18 months minimum
- ✗Hanja recognition — Chinese character roots in Korean vocabulary — a longer-term project
