5 Tones. 44 Consonants. Absolutely Worth It.
One-on-one lessons with expert teachers. From first tones to business fluency — all levels A1 to C2.
The Thai Tonal System
Thai has 5 tones. The same syllable in different tones has completely different meanings. Your tutor will teach you to hear and produce each tone from day one.
Thai script encodes tones: Once you learn Thai script and its consonant class system (high / mid / low), you can read the correct tone directly from the letters — making the tonal system much more learnable than it first appears.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the 5 tones really that hard?
Tones are the biggest initial challenge for English speakers, but most students master tone production within 4–8 weeks with a good tutor. The key is learning the consonant class system — once you understand why tones change based on the class of the initial consonant, reading tones from script becomes logical rather than memorised.
Should I learn Thai script or just use romanisation?
We strongly recommend learning Thai script from the start. Thai romanisation systems vary wildly and are not standardised — relying on romanisation creates a ceiling. The Thai script, while complex, is phonetic and consistent. Most students can read basic Thai within 4–8 weeks with tutor guidance.
What is the difference between Central, Northern, and Southern Thai?
Central Thai (Bangkok Thai) is the standard dialect taught in schools and used in media — this is what your Unox teacher will focus on. Northern Thai (Kham Mueang) spoken in Chiang Mai and the north, and Southern Thai spoken in the south, are distinct dialects. Understanding Central Thai gives you a strong foundation for navigating all regions.
How long does it take to hold a basic conversation?
Most learners can hold simple conversations (ordering food, giving directions, basic pleasantries) after 2–3 months of regular lessons at 3 hours per week. The tonal system takes a few weeks to internalise, but everyday phrases can be learned quickly even before full tonal mastery.
What are ครับ (khrap) and ค่ะ (kha) and why do they matter?
These are polite particles added to the end of sentences — ครับ is used by male speakers, ค่ะ by female speakers. Using them marks you as respectful and culturally aware. In Thai culture, politeness particles are important in any formal or semi-formal context, and Thai people notice and appreciate foreigners who use them correctly.
