Hindi vs Urdu — What's the Difference?
Mutually intelligible in speech, profoundly different in writing, script, and cultural context.
| Aspect | Hindi | Urdu |
|---|---|---|
| Script | Devanagari (left-to-right) | Nastaliq (Persian-Arabic, right-to-left) |
| Vocabulary | Sanskrit roots (tatsama) | Persian & Arabic loanwords |
| Spoken | Mutually intelligible at conversational level | Mutually intelligible at conversational level |
| Formal register | Diverges strongly (heavily Sanskritised) | Diverges strongly (heavily Persianised) |
| Status | Official language of India | National language of Pakistan, official in 6 Indian states |
| Cultural context | Hinduism, Bollywood, Indian classical arts | Islam, Qawwali, Sufi poetry, Pakistani media |
The key insight:If you watch a Pakistani drama and an Indian film, you will understand much of both — the spoken base is the same. But Urdu's Nastaliq script is written right-to-left in an elegant cursive style derived from Persian, and formal Urdu draws heavily on Persian and Arabic vocabulary. Your Unox tutor will help you navigate exactly where to start.
Why Learn Urdu?
Pakistan's National Language
Urdu is the lingua franca of Pakistan — spoken and understood across all four provinces regardless of regional language. Essential for work, travel, and connection in the country.
Bollywood & Music Connection
Many Bollywood songs and films use Urdu vocabulary extensively — particularly poetry, romantic dialogue, and ghazals. Understanding Urdu deepens your appreciation of South Asian cinema and music.
Nastaliq Calligraphy
Urdu's Nastaliq script is considered one of the world's most beautiful writing systems. Learning to read and write it is an aesthetic and artistic journey as much as a linguistic one.
Urdu Poetry (Shayari)
The ghazals of Mirza Ghalib, the national poetry of Allama Iqbal, the Sufi verses of Rumi translated into Urdu — a rich literary tradition spanning centuries.
Large Diaspora Community
Over 1 million Urdu speakers live in the UK, and large communities exist in the USA, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Canada. Urdu connects you to a global network.
Gateway to Persian & Arabic
Urdu shares significant vocabulary with Persian and uses the Persian-Arabic script. Urdu learners find Persian and Arabic vocabulary acquisition significantly faster.

Frequently Asked Questions
If I know Hindi, can I speak Urdu without extra study?
Yes — spoken Urdu and Hindi are mutually intelligible at the conversational level. A Hindi speaker can understand everyday Urdu immediately. The learning curve is the Nastaliq script and the formal Persianised vocabulary, which diverges significantly from formal Hindi.
How hard is Nastaliq script?
Most students can read Nastaliq at a basic level within 4–8 weeks with regular tutor guidance. It is written right-to-left and letters change shape depending on their position in a word (initial, medial, final). The flowing calligraphic style is beautiful but takes longer to write neatly than to read.
Should I learn Urdu or Hindi?
If your goal is Pakistan, Urdu communities in the UK/USA/Gulf, Qawwali music, or Urdu literature — learn Urdu. If your goal is India and Bollywood — learn Hindi. The spoken languages are nearly identical; it is the script and formal vocabulary that differ. Many learners study both.
Is Punjabi similar to Urdu?
Punjabi and Urdu are related but distinct. Urdu is Pakistan's national language and lingua franca across all provinces; Punjabi is a separate regional language spoken in Punjab. Many Punjabi Pakistanis code-switch between Punjabi and Urdu, so learning Urdu gives you access across the country.
How long does it take to reach conversational Urdu?
With a dedicated tutor, most learners achieve A2 (basic conversation) in 3–4 months at 3 hours per week. B1 conversational fluency typically takes 12–18 months. Hindi speakers can compress this significantly — conversational fluency in as little as 2–3 months focused on script.
