Vietnamese Tones: The 6-Tone System
Vietnamese is a tonal language — the same syllable means completely different things depending on pitch contour. Apps can play audio, but only a tutor can hear your mistake and correct it in real time.
| Tone Name | Mark | Contour | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat (ngang) | a | Level, mid pitch — the default unmarked tone. | ma (ghost) |
| Rising (sắc) | á | Rising pitch, like asking a question. | má (cheek / mother) |
| Falling (huyền) | à | Falling, low, slightly breathy. | mà (but) |
| Broken (hỏi) | ả | Rises then dips — a wavering contour. | mả (tomb) |
| Heavy (nặng) | ạ | Low, short, and constricted — cut off sharply. | mạ (rice seedling) |
| Tumbling (ngã) | ã | High, creaky, and rising — unique to Vietnamese. | mã (horse / code) |
💡 Why apps are not enough for tones: Duolingo plays a sound and marks you right or wrong. A Vietnamese tutor hears the specific contour error you're making — rising too early, not constricting enough for nặng — and gives targeted feedback in seconds.
Northern vs. Southern Vietnamese
🏛️ Northern Vietnamese (Hanoi)
- • Considered the formal literary and media standard
- • Six tones pronounced with clearer differentiation
- • Initial consonants d, gi, r all pronounced differently
- • Used in official government, education, and national media
- • Best for: formal contexts, academic study, official communication
🌆 Southern Vietnamese (Ho Chi Minh City)
- • Softer on some initial consonants (d, gi, r often merge)
- • Slightly different vowel realization in some syllables
- • Very common in the Vietnamese diaspora worldwide
- • Warmer, more casual register in everyday speech
- • Best for: diaspora connection, southern business, casual conversation
Both dialects are mutually intelligible. Your tutor will help you choose based on your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the 6 tones really that difficult?
They're different — not impossible. English speakers already use pitch for emotion and questions; Vietnamese tones are just more systematic. Most learners can distinguish all 6 tones within 4–6 weeks of focused practice. A tutor gives real-time feedback that apps simply cannot.
Should I learn Northern (Hanoi) or Southern (Ho Chi Minh City) Vietnamese?
Both are mutually intelligible and standard. Hanoi Vietnamese is considered the formal literary standard and is used in official media. Southern Vietnamese is softer in some consonants and widely spoken in the diaspora. Tell your tutor your goal and they'll advise.
How long does it take to reach conversational fluency?
FSI rates Vietnamese at ~1,100 hours for English speakers to reach professional working proficiency. With consistent 1-on-1 lessons (5 hours/week), most students hold genuine conversations within 3–4 months.
Does speaking a tonal language (Mandarin/Thai) help?
Yes — tonal language speakers typically acquire Vietnamese tones faster. But Vietnamese has 6 tones (Mandarin has 4) and the tone contours differ significantly, so you'll still need dedicated drilling.
Is there a Vietnamese proficiency exam I can take?
Yes — the VSTEP (Vietnamese Standardized Test of English Proficiency equivalence framework) and the Vietnamese Language Proficiency Test (VLPT) are the main certificates. Your tutor can prep you for both.
Can I find tutors who focus on the Vietnamese diaspora community?
Absolutely. Unox has tutors based in the US, Australia, and France who specialize in heritage and diaspora learners — students who may understand spoken Vietnamese at home but want stronger literacy and formal register.
