Norwegian Tutors in Bergen
Bergen is Norway's second-largest city and the gateway to the western fjords. The Bergen dialect (Bergensk) is distinctive — and Bergensers are famously proud of it. Bergen is also the birthplace of Edvard Grieg and a major hub for the Norwegian oil industry via its proximity to Stavanger.
Bokmål vs Nynorsk — Which Norwegian?
Norway has two official written standards. Most learners study Bokmål — but knowing the difference matters.
Bokmål
Literally 'book language' — the more widely used of Norway's two official written standards. Derived from Dano-Norwegian. Used by ~85–90% of Norwegians in writing. What most textbooks and online resources teach. The standard in Oslo and eastern Norway.
Nynorsk
Literally 'New Norwegian' — constructed in the 19th century from rural Norwegian dialects as an alternative to the Dano-Norwegian standard. Used by ~10–15% of Norwegians in writing. Common in western Norway (Bergen region, fjord areas).
Norwegian in Bergen
Bergensk (Bergen dialect) is a western Norwegian dialect distinct from Oslo's Østnorsk. It has different vowel sounds and tonal patterns. Standard tuition uses Bokmål or Nynorsk, but exposure to Bergensk is important for those living or working in the Bergen region.
