Polish Grammar: The 7 Cases

Mianownik (Nominative)
Subject of the sentence. Who is doing the action. 'Kot je' — The cat eats.
Dopełniacz (Genitive)
Possession, negation, 'of'. The most frequently needed case. 'Nie ma kota' — There is no cat.
Celownik (Dative)
Indirect object. 'To/for whom'. 'Dałem kotu mleko' — I gave the cat milk.
Biernik (Accusative)
Direct object of most verbs. 'Widzę kota' — I see the cat.
Narzędnik (Instrumental)
Means or instrument. Also used after certain prepositions. 'Piszę piórem' — I write with a pen.
Miejscownik (Locative)
