Romanian retains Latin roots more faithfully than any other Romance language in some respects. Speakers of Spanish, French, Italian, or Portuguese will recognise hundreds of words immediately — 'om' (man), 'apă' (water), 'casă' (house).
Romanian uses the Latin alphabet with a few additional letters (ă, â, î, ș, ț). There is no new script to learn — you can start reading Romanian text from day one.
Romanian is an official language of the European Union. With 24 million native speakers and over 4 million diaspora speakers in Spain, Italy, and Western Europe, it has real practical value.
Romanian has absorbed vocabulary from Bulgarian, Slavic languages, Turkish, and Hungarian through centuries of contact. This makes it distinctive within Romance — some vocabulary will be unfamiliar even to Spanish speakers, creating interesting learning moments.
Unlike Spanish or French, Romanian retains a simplified case system from Latin — nominative/accusative and genitive/dative are merged, but cases exist. This is manageable, especially for learners who know German, Russian, or Polish.
