Cantonese: A 9-Tone Language
Cantonese has 9 tones — 6 level tones and 3 entering tones (checked tones that end in a stop consonant). This is more tones than any other major Chinese variety. A tutor trained in the full tonal system is essential.
Note: some modern descriptions simplify to 6 tones by merging the entering tones with their level counterparts. Traditional formal Cantonese teaching uses 9 tones.
