New York's Cantonese community has roots going back 150 years. Manhattan's Chinatown preserves Cantonese cultural life alongside newer Mandarin-speaking arrivals. The city's heritage learner population — children and grandchildren of Cantonese immigrants — represents a significant and growing learner community.
New York's Manhattan Chinatown is one of the oldest Cantonese communities in the US — Cantonese speakers arrived in the 19th century and built community institutions around the language. Flushing has more mixed Cantonese/Mandarin use. Heritage learners are a large segment of the NYC Cantonese learner community.
Cantonese: A 9-Tone Language
Cantonese has 9 tones — 6 level tones and 3 entering tones (checked tones that end in a stop consonant). This is more tones than any other major Chinese variety. A tutor trained in the full tonal system is essential.
Note: some modern descriptions simplify to 6 tones by merging the entering tones with their level counterparts. Traditional formal Cantonese teaching uses 9 tones.
High pitch, flat and sustained.
Starts high, rises sharply.
Mid pitch, flat and clear.
Starts mid-low, falls gently.
Starts low, rises to mid.
Low pitch, flat and sustained.
High short stop.
Mid short stop.
Low short stop.
Cantonese vs Mandarin: Why It Matters for New York
Cantonese and Mandarin are not dialects of each other — they are distinct spoken languages with different phonology, vocabulary, and grammar, although they share a writing system. In New York, both communities may coexist. Make sure you are learning from a tutor who specialises in the language you want: Cantonese for cultural connection to Hong Kong, Guangdong, and the global diaspora; Mandarin for Mainland China, Taiwan, and international business. Our Cantonese tutors are specialists in the spoken Cantonese system, not Mandarin instructors who also "do Cantonese."
