A strong trial lesson should never feel like a hard sell. It should feel useful, professional, and clearly worth continuing. This script gives tutors a repeatable 30-minute rhythm they can personalize for different learners.

5 Stage

Stage 1 · 0-5 min

Warm introduction and expectation setting

Build trust quickly and help the student relax before you begin diagnosing level.

Does the student sound nervous, rushed, or unsure about what they need?

Tutor moves

Introduce yourself in one short, confident paragraph.

Ask why the student wants to learn Chinese right now.

Explain what will happen in the next 30 minutes so the lesson feels structured.

Today I want to understand your level, help you practice one useful speaking goal, and show you what our next lessons could look like.

Stage 2 · 5-10 min

Assess the student's level

Identify speaking confidence, comprehension, pronunciation, and the right teaching pace.

Which part breaks first: confidence, pronunciation, grammar, or listening speed?

Tutor moves

Ask two or three simple questions related to the student's goal.

Listen for hesitation, vocabulary gaps, and whether the student needs pinyin, English support, or slower speech.

Choose one skill to focus on for the teaching segment.

Before we go deeper, I want to hear how you currently introduce yourself in Chinese. Just use whatever you already know.

Stage 3 · 10-20 min

Interactive teaching and practice

Create one clear improvement moment while showing your teaching style.

Can the student reproduce the new phrase more smoothly after one or two correction loops?

Tutor moves

Teach one small pattern or dialogue connected to the student's real goal.

Use model-repeat-adjust-repeat loops so the student speaks often.

Correct only the most important mistakes and keep the energy positive.

Let me give you a cleaner version first. Listen once, then we’ll say it together, and after that you’ll try it alone.

Stage 4 · 20-25 min

Summarize progress and make improvement visible

Turn the lesson into a clear before-and-after moment the student can feel.

Does the student react with confidence, surprise, or curiosity about what comes next?

Ask the student to repeat the same task from earlier with your support removed.

Point out exactly what improved compared with the first five minutes.

Name one next step that would deepen the progress.

Sample line

At the start, this sentence was hard for you. Now you can say it more naturally and with better word order. That is real progress in one lesson.

Stage 5 · 25-30 min

Recommend a realistic lesson package

Make the next purchase feel like the natural continuation of what already worked.

Does the student need reassurance, a smaller package, or a more concrete roadmap before deciding?

Link the student's goal to a simple weekly learning rhythm.

Recommend the next 4-8 lessons in plain language, not abstract promises.

Invite questions and close with confidence, not pressure.

Sample line

If your goal is confident conversation, I’d recommend one or two lessons per week. In the next four classes, we could build from today’s introduction into real workplace and daily-life situations.

The tone that converts

Students do not continue because they were pressured. They continue because they felt safe, made visible progress, and could imagine what would happen next if they stayed with you.

How to recommend the next package naturally

Do not close with pressure. Close with clarity: what the student improved today, what still needs work, and what a realistic weekly plan would look like. A calm, specific recommendation converts better than a generic pitch.
