Top 10 Chinese Phrases for Travelers Visiting China
1. Hello and Thank You
Start with 你好 (ni hao) for hello and 谢谢 (xie xie) for thank you. These two phrases alone change the tone of an interaction. Even if the rest of the conversation happens through gestures, people usually respond warmly when they hear that you made an effort to speak Chinese first.
2. How Much Is It? and I Want This
多少钱? (duo shao qian?) helps in markets, taxis, and small shops. Pair it with 我要这个 (wo yao zhe ge), which means I want this one. Together, they let you point, confirm, and complete simple buying situations without needing full sentences.
3. Where Is...? and I Do Not Understand
If you need help finding a place, use ...在哪儿? (... zai nar?) with a location such as 洗手间 (xi shou jian, bathroom) or 地铁站 (di tie zhan, subway station). When the answer comes too fast, use 我听不懂 (wo ting bu dong), which means I do not understand. These two phrases are lifesavers in stations and busy streets.
4. Can You Say It Again? and Is It Okay to Pay by Card?
能再说一遍吗? (neng zai shuo yi bian ma?) buys you time and often makes the other person simplify their Chinese. In bigger cities you may also want 可以刷卡吗? (ke yi shua ka ma?), meaning can I pay by card? Mobile payment is common in China, so being able to ask about payment options reduces friction quickly.
5. Learn the Phrases as Mini Scenes
Do not memorize the ten phrases as isolated vocabulary. Practice them as small scenes: greeting a driver, asking the price, pointing at a menu, finding the bathroom, and thanking a hotel staff member. If you rehearse them with AI before your trip and then use them on your first day in China, they will feel much more natural under pressure.
