HSK Exam Guide
The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is China's official standardized Mandarin proficiency test. Whether you are aiming for HSK 1 or pushing for HSK 6, this guide covers every level, vocabulary count, study hours, and the differences between the Old and New HSK systems.
China introduced the New HSK (3.0) system in 2021, expanding from 6 levels to 9. HSK 1–6 roughly correspond to the old system with updated vocabulary counts; HSK 7–9 are entirely new advanced tiers.
| Level | Vocabulary | Study Hours | Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
| HSK 1 | 500 | 100–150h | Tourist basics, greetings, numbers |
| HSK 2 | 1,272 | 200–300h | Simple conversations, daily errands |
| HSK 3 | 2,245 | 400–600h | Basic work Chinese, travel independently |
| HSK 4 | 3,245 | 600–900h | Most everyday topics, intermediate fluency |
| HSK 5 | 4,316 | 900–1,200h | News, literature, professional settings |
| HSK 6 | 5,456 | 1,200h+ | Native-level reading, university entry |
| HSK 7 | ~11,000 | 1,500h+ | Academic research, complex negotiation |
| HSK 8 | ~14,000 | 2,000h+ | Near-native comprehension, specialized fields |
| HSK 9 | ~15,000+ | 2,500h+ | Mastery, equivalent to educated native speaker |
Study hour estimates assume 1–2 hours of focused study per day from zero prior knowledge. Heritage speakers may progress significantly faster.
In 2021 the Hanban replaced the classic 6-level framework with the New HSK 3.0 standard. If you have an old certificate, here is how the systems map.
| Old HSK (pre-2021) | New HSK 3.0 (2021+) | Key Difference |
|---|---|---|
| HSK 1 (150 words) | HSK 1 (500 words) | Larger entry-level vocab required |
| HSK 2 (300 words) | HSK 2 (1,272 words) | Significantly expanded |
| HSK 3 (600 words) | HSK 3 (2,245 words) | More than 3× more vocabulary |
| HSK 4 (1,200 words) | HSK 4 (3,245 words) | Broader intermediate scope |
| HSK 5 (2,500 words) | HSK 5 (4,316 words) | Elevated upper-intermediate bar |
| HSK 6 (5,000+ words) | HSK 6 (5,456 words) | Similar ceiling, refined content |
| No equivalent | HSK 7–9 (11,000–15,000+) | Entirely new advanced tiers |
Both old and new certificates remain valid. Many universities and employers accept either. When in doubt, ask the specific institution.
HSK 5+ strengthens student visa applications and long-term residency permits in mainland China. Required for many university exchange programs.
HSK 4–5 is the standard entry requirement for most Chinese undergraduate programs. Graduate programs typically require HSK 5–6.
Employers in trade, finance, logistics, and diplomacy pay a significant premium for verified Mandarin proficiency. HSK is the globally recognized benchmark.
