How to Pass HSK 3: The Complete Study Plan
What HSK 3 Actually Tests
HSK 3 requires 600 vocabulary words and tests reading, listening, and writing. The exam has 80 questions in 85 minutes. Passing score is 180/300 (60%).
The 14-Week Study Plan
Weeks 1-4: master HSK 1-2 vocabulary (500 words). Weeks 5-10: learn all 600 HSK 3 words using spaced repetition. Weeks 11-12: grammar patterns (把 sentence, 被 passive, 如果...就). Weeks 13-14: full mock exams.
Listening Section Strategy
The listening section plays each audio once. Practice active listening daily using HSK 3 dialogue recordings. Focus on numbers, times, and locations — common question targets.
Reading Section Strategy
All reading items test vocabulary in context. If you know the 600 HSK 3 words, you can answer most questions. Practice reading speed — 70 questions in 50 minutes means under 45 seconds per question.
Writing Section Strategy
HSK 3 writing has two parts: reordering shuffled words into correct sentences, and writing characters from pinyin. Stroke order and character accuracy matter for the writing section.
Why a Teacher Makes the Difference
Self-study passes the knowledge check but a teacher identifies your specific weak points. Many students fail HSK 3 due to listening speed, not vocabulary. A teacher can drill exactly what you're missing.
