Unox teaches Standard Mandarin (Putonghua) — the official language of mainland China and Taiwan, spoken by 1+ billion people. Mandarin uses 4 tones and a standardized vocabulary taught in schools across China. Cantonese, spoken mainly in Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangdong province, is a separate language with 6–9 tones and distinct vocabulary. If your goal is to communicate in mainland China or Taiwan, Mandarin is the right choice.

Mandarin tutor FAQ
How many tones does Mandarin have, and how hard are they?
Mandarin has 4 tones plus a neutral tone. They are challenging for native English speakers but learnable with a good tutor. Most students can reliably produce all four tones within 4–8 weeks of focused practice. A native-speaking tutor can catch tone mistakes instantly — something no app can do.
Do I need to learn to write Chinese characters?
For conversational goals, no — you can get far with pinyin and spoken Mandarin. For HSK 4 and above, reading characters becomes important. Many students choose to learn characters gradually alongside speaking. Your Unox tutor can tailor the balance to your personal goals.
Which HSK level should I target first?
HSK 1 (150 words) takes most learners 1–2 months with 3 hours/week. HSK 3 (600 words) is conversational fluency for everyday topics. HSK 5–6 is professional or academic level. Your tutor will assess your current level and recommend a realistic timeline.
Is online Mandarin tutoring as effective as in-person?
For 1-on-1 instruction, research and student outcomes consistently show online is as effective as in-person — and more convenient. Unox tutors use shared whiteboards, pinyin tools, character practice sheets, and video to replicate the classroom experience.
